Heavy-duty 4-layer limit straps designed for the rigors of off-roading.
Limit straps are essential in custom suspension setups, helping prevent damage to suspension and suspension components. transmission. Without limit straps, the force of your vehicle's unsprung weight can cause shock damage when jumping or at high speeds over rough sections.
Limit straps can also prevent damage to your CV joints . All CV joints have a maximum degree of deflection at which they can operate safely. With custom suspension configurations. the deflection angle can go further than the CV joint can handle, leading to damage, shorter life and CV failure. Limit straps can prevent this by reducing the maximum angle on your axles.
Each PRP limit strap is sewnue in 4 layers of thickness with 10,000 lb webbing. Available in 1″ increments from 6″ to 38″ to suit your specific application. Measured from the center of each hole.
Sold individually.
HOW TO MEASURE THE STRAP LIMIT LENGTH YOU NEED
Determine your points Mounting – You need to weld the mounting locations on your chassis and suspension. If you don't want to weld on your chassis, you can use longer shock bolts and spacers to mount your limit straps. However, this adds leverage and stress to a longer shock bolt, and is not ideal for this reason. For some UTVs, PRP sells a limit strap kit that includes longer shock bolts and spacers so the strap clears the shock body (see PRP's UTV Limit Strap Kits). Most off-road stores sell tabs at souder for limit straps that you can use to create a mounting point. We also strongly recommend using an adjustable limit strap clevis (see below for more information). *You must adjust these mounting points before you can measure the length of strap you need.
Use a jack to raise the vehicle, so the wheels are off the ground. This allows your wheels and shocks to be at "full droop" (when the shocks are completely expelled).
Measure the distance between your two mounting points – It This is the maximum limit to which your shocks will still be fully extended (and can cause damage over time). Let's call this measurement "X",
Take your X measurement and minus 1" of length for every 12" of strap. This is the corrected length you should actually order.
- Example: If your mesure - We want the limit strap to prevent the shock from fully extending (which it does above 24"), so we "limit" the travel (by 2") to prevent it from extending extend fully, and to compensate for the amount of stretch of the limit strap.
- Will the limit straps stretch over time from the combined weight of the wheels/tires/arms pulling on the strap? of limit makes them stretch. Knowing the exact amount that each stretch is difficult to calculate. It depends on the weight of your unsprung weight, where on your suspension the limit strap is mounted, the definition of the limit. utv, Hisun 800 utv parts diagram and the leverage created by where you chose to mount the limit strap. At PRP we test our strap.limit up to a breaking strength of 10,000 lbs, but it's difficult to know how much force each vehicle can create and how much stretch that will create. So, as a general rule, to be on the safe side, we recommend accounting for 1″ of stretch for every 12″ of strap when ordering. So most customers measure and adjust for this stretch when purchasing a strap (24″ measurement – requires a 22″ strap to compensate for the stretch). Which means that when the strap is new, it will limit travel by an additional amount (2″)… then as the strap stretches over time, that number will decrease and get closer to the ideal limit measurement (23 .5″-24″). So that the limit strap is just slightly shorter than your maximum limit. If you want to fine-tune this measurement, you can also use an adjustable screed.
Ccheck if your CVs are binding - After measuring, check alsoment if your constant velocity joints are restrictive. This can happen often on long travel vehicles, where shocks allow the wheels to travel much lower, creating an extreme angle for the axles/CVs that causes them to bind.
- How to check CVs – Put the car in neutral and try to spin the tire. If the tire spins freely… then everything is fine. If the wheel is hanging/stuck/squealing... then the CV or transmission is too tilted. You need to remove the shock, raise the wheel an inch and try again. Repeat this until the CV no longer binds, then measure the distance "X" for the limit strap and minus 1" in length for every 12" of strap.
HOW THE ADJUSTABLE CHAPTER WORK
Over time, the combined weight of the wheels/tires/brass on the limit strap causes them to stretch (usually 1″ of stretch per 12″ of strap). For this reason, most customers measureand adjust for this stretch when they purchase a strap (24″ measurement – requires a 22″ strap to compensate for the stretch). Which means that when the strap is new, it will limit travel by an additional amount (2″)… then as the strap stretches over time, that number will decrease and get closer to the ideal limit measurement (23 .5″-24″ ).
With an adjustable clevis, you have the ability to fine-tune this measurement. Limit travel just enough to protect your shocks and CVs, UTV trailer parts, UTV parts with affirmation, without having to also limit travel an additional amount. As the strap stretches, simply adjust the clevis to tighten the strap. Keeping it at the optimal length to avoid damaging the shocks or binding the CVs.
Adjustable clevises are also configured to hold multiple limit straps (PRP's can hold 1, 2 or 3 straps oflimit). Which is needed for heavier vehicles that have more weight with larger tires and arms (such as Ultra4, Trophy Lite and Trophy Trucks).
How to measure a limit strap that will be used with an adjustable clevis – Make sure the clevis is fully extended while you measure your "X" length.
- If your X measurement is between 0 and 24", you can Usually just order the limit strap at the "X" length, then tighten the clevis over time (you don't need to adjust it for stretching).
- If the length of your "X" is 24"+, you may not be able to tighten the clevis and entire 3" or 4" over time. It is therefore necessary to minus 1" or 2" of the length "X", and after the first trips, the limit strap must stretch enough to be able to start tightening it with the clevis.
